Planned Schedule for the SVU Summer Ship Swap:

  • Now thru June 5: Organization, planning & promotion of the exchange

  • June 6: Ship Nominations Open

  • June 19: Ship Nominations Close

  • June 22: Sign Ups Open

  • July 5: Sign Ups Close

  • July 13: Assignments go out no later than this day (sooner if matching goes smoothly)

  • August 17: Assignments due

  • August 24: Pinch Hits due

  • August 27: Story Reveals no later than this day

  • One week after Story Reveals: Author/Artist Reveals

Author reveals are now live

If you’ve been itching to see who wrote your story (or just want to see who contributed what), authors have now been revealed.

See the entire collection here at AO3.

I want to thank everyone who took part in the exchange this summer and I hope you had a fun time with it! I’ll be making a wrap-up post this week with some questions/discussion topics for future rounds of the exchange and any changes in the rules that may be made.

Additionally I’m looking at running an SVU prompt fest for the holidays that will run similar to this one, but without the commitment to have to contribute to add prompts…so stay tuned for the details on that.

Story collection to open tonight!

This is just a reminder that the AO3 collection will be opened this evening - 11pm Eastern Time on August 21st.  So if you are planning on or finishing any last-minute edits, treats, or what-have-you, please have them done by the opening time.

Also remember that author/artist identities will remain “anonymous” for one week from opening time. After one week (on August 28) creators will be revealed. So part of the fun is trying to guess who might have written what story – or simply enjoying them without any expectations :)

One general pointer, to make sure everyone browsing the SVU tag at AO3 sees your creations: you may wish to update the publication date for your submission(s) from whenever you uploaded them to the current date. (This is totally common, accepted practice for AO3-hosted exchanges so that the submissions show up at the top of fandom tag.) To do so:

1. go in to edit your work(s)

2. scroll down to “Set a different publication date” under Associations and check that box

3. set the publication date to the current date

4. then “post without preview”

…and you’re done!

Assignment deadline is almost here!

This is another reminder that the deadline for completing your assignments is coming up very soon - as in tonight.

Stories and/or art must be submitted to the collection fulfilling your assignment by this evening, August 17, at 11:59 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

On the 18th I will go through the collection to verify and see if anyone is in default and if their assignment needs to be sent out for a pinch hit. As I will have a busy work day on the 18th, I most likely will not post an update/pinch hits until later that evening.

When will the collection open for reading?

The collection will open once everyone (who did not default on fulfilling their assignment) has a gift which meets the minimum requirements. If we need to send out pinch hits then there will be a week’s time given to complete those submissions.

Can I edit my submission in the meantime?

Yes! Even if you’ve uploaded your gift(s) already you can still go in and edit them if you find any corrections or additions need to be made. However, please don’t use this as an excuse to simply post a “placeholder” story (or random text) by the deadline. I will be checking all submissions!

Can I submit treats after the deadline tonight?

Absolutely! Treats may be posted at any time leading up to the collection opening for readers to view. So if you have any ideas for short fics, drabbles, graphics or other gifts you want to add, feel free. Remember that you can view the complete list of requests here:

Any questions or problems with uploading your works, feel free to message me at any time.

Deadline Reminder and Pinch Hits

This is just a reminder that the deadline for submitting your assigned works for the Summer ShipSwap is at the end of the day on August 17 (11:59 PM Eastern Time). That's less than a week from now.

If you know before the deadline that you will not be able to complete your assignment, please message as soon as possible (you can also go to your assignment page at AO3 and simply click the button for "Default"). That way I’ll be able to post a pinch hit request for someone else to fulfill your assignment, and we can avoid delays in opening the collection up to readers.

You will still receive your gift and any treats submitted for you even if you default. However, if your assigned author also defaults, then your requests will not go out for a pinch hit. To clarify, here is an example:

Say Alex has been assigned to write a story for Olivia.

Olivia has been assigned to write a story for Casey.

Casey has been assigned to write a story for Alex.

Alex defaults and does not finish her assignment for Olivia. Casey also defaults and does not finish her assignment for Alex. Olivia does finish her assignment for Casey. A pinch hit request will go out for Olivia’s requests to make sure she gets a story, but not for Alex’s. Casey will still receive her story as written by Olivia. Any treats submitted for the three of them will still get posted and gifted as originally intended.

Hopefully that makes sense!

Reminder regarding "Dear Author/Artist Letters"

I've had several repeated asks regarding letters which are still locked/not viewable to assigned creators.

If you are planning to post a letter with any prompts/general likes or dislikes, I'd like to encourage you to please try to finish or unlock it by the end of this weekend? Some authors are eager to get writing but are hung up on waiting for more details, if they are going to be coming. Otherwise I will just be encouraging them to begin working on whatever they might feel like for the general ship prompts that they were given, as we are now past the date by which I originally said assignments would go out—and in fact they went out over a week ago.

Thank you!

Sign ups closed; assignments emailed

Sign-ups for this first round of the ShipSwap are now closed. The good news is after running a first attempt through the matching software, everyone has been assigned a match with no initial pinch hits needed.

That means you should have received an email with your assignment at this point in time. It will come from “” and the subject line will include “Your Assignment!”, so be sure to check your junk mail folders if you do not seem to have received it. Your assignment will also be viewable at your AO3 dashboard under “Assignments”.

Your assignment should include at least one and possibly more matches on ships you offered you could write. You are free to actually write any ship your recipient requested, whether or not you initially offered it.

If you have any problems with your assignment, or have a question you’d like to ask your recipient anonymously, please contact me and I’ll see what I can do to help.

Additionally, while I know assignments went out faster than expected, if you were planning to write a "Dear Author/Artist" letter please try to get yours posted soon, if possible. (Or make sure it is unlocked and can be publicly viewed.) I've had a few asks already about locked letters so I know people are eager to start writing!

SVU Ship Swap: Sign-ups now open!

SVU ShipSwap: Sign-Up Instructions

Signing up for this exchange is a promise to either write a story (of 1,000 words or greater in length) or create an original work of art for another participant. Please be sure you should have the time to commit to doing this, by the deadline date of August 17 2016, before deciding to participate. (You will have at least 5 weeks to create your work.)

When you sign up for the exchange, you must request a minimum of three different ships you’re willing to receive, and a minimum of four different pairings you’re willing to offer. The only ships eligible are those which have already been nominated and approved, and they are all listed in our tagset.

For both requests and offers you can submit a maximum of 10. Obviously, the more you can offer and request, the better your chances of being matched on either will be. However, please only offer to create works for ’ships you genuinely feel comfortable offering—this is not meant to pressure you to offer ships you are not comfortable working with.

How to Submit Your Sign-Up

Go to the exchange sign up page on AO3 found here:

In the “Fandom” selection box for Requests, be sure to check the box for “Law & Order: SVU”.

In the Relationship box, fill in your first requested ship. Just start typing a name and the auto-fill possibilities should show up from the accepted nominated pairings. If it doesn’t (and not all ships do), copy & paste your requested ship exactly as it appears in the tagset for the exchange ( If you do not submit it in the proper format, you will not be able to be matched on that ship.

In the “Additional Tags” box, indicate if you are interested in receiving Fic, Art, or both by checking the appropriate boxes. (Please keep in mind we are very likely to have more writers than artists sign up for the exchange. So if you onlycheck that you are interested in receiving art, you may be difficult to match with an offering participant.)

In the “Prompt URL” box, include a link (optional) to where you have posted any “Dear Author” letter for your matched author/artist to read. There you can include any likes/dislikes you may have either in general or specifically for this ship. You can include specific prompt ideas you might have as well, which many creators find useful in exchanges for giving them ideas. However, keep in mind that “optional details are optional” - your creator is not required to follow any prompts you suggest. They only are required to write or create art for the ship you have requested. It is, however, considered good and proper exchange etiquette to honor any “Do Not Wants” a requestor might specify in their letter or otherwise. (So if someone states they Do Not Want, for example, a flowershop AU story, it would be bad form to disregard that request and write one anyway.)

If you don’t feel like writing a “Dear Author/Artist” letter, you can include your optional details/prompts in the “Description” box.

Repeat the above process for the 3-10 requests you have, then move on to the Offers section. The process for submitting your offers is very much the same as the above, except you do not have to fill out any “Prompt URL” or “Description” boxes. Just be sure to indicate if you are offering Fic, Art, or possibly either for each offer you make.

When you are finished with your offers and requests, be sure to hit the “Submit” button. If there is any missing information in your sign-up, you will receive an error message indicating what needs to be fixed.

Can I edit my sign-up after I’ve submitted it?

Yes, you can edit your sign-up all the way up until the deadline of July 5, in case you change your mind on your requests or offers—or want to delete your sign-up completely. Requests will be viewable here as soon as sign-ups open, so you may adjust your offers based on what has been requested so far. (Maybe someone’s prompt or letter will give you inspiration to write a ship you initially weren’t sure about offering!)

Your offers will not be publicly viewable.

What happens if I can’t be matched on the ships I have requested?

Your requests will be sent out for pinch hits. You will not be asked to request other ships that you may not be interested in.

What happens if I can’t be matched on the ships I have offered?

If no one has requested the ships you’ve offered to write, the admin will contact you to see if you are willing to offer any other ships for the exchange. If not, then regrettably we will have to reject your sign-up from the exchange.

Run into any problems? Please contact me and I will try to fix/answer your questions as soon as possible.

Remember, you will have to request 3-10 different ships on your sign up and offer to write 4-10 ships (though of course you will only be assigned to write or create art for one of those offered.) So now is the time to start thinking about your choices if you haven’t narrowed them down already.

Full sign-up instructions will be posted when the process begins.
